Bahrain has achieved a significant milestone by climbing to 20th place out of 70 economies…

Bahrain has achieved a significant milestone by climbing to 20th place out of 70 economies in the 2026 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking, improving from 22nd place in 2025. The annual report, published by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), is one of the world’s most respected assessments of a country’s ability to create a competitive environment for businesses and long-term economic growth. The Kingdom’s improved position reflects years of strategic planning and reforms designed to strengthen its economy. It also highlights Bahrain’s continued commitment to enhancing government services, encouraging investment, and supporting sustainable development. The latest ranking reinforces the country’s growing reputation as a competitive and resilient economy in the Gulf region.

The IMD World Competitiveness Ranking measures economies across four key pillars: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure. Bahrain recorded strong results in each category, demonstrating balanced progress across multiple sectors that contribute to national competitiveness. Government initiatives aimed at improving regulatory efficiency and expanding digital services have helped create a more supportive environment for businesses and investors. Continued investment in infrastructure, technology, and public services has also strengthened the Kingdom’s ability to compete internationally while meeting the needs of a growing economy. At the same time, Bahrain’s business-friendly policies have encouraged entrepreneurship, attracted foreign direct investment, and supported private sector expansion. These efforts are aligned with the country’s long-term economic diversification strategy, reducing reliance on traditional revenue sources while promoting innovation and knowledge-based industries. The improved ranking also reflects confidence in Bahrain’s stable economic framework and its ability to adapt to changing global market conditions. As international competition continues to evolve, maintaining a strong business ecosystem remains essential for sustainable growth. Bahrain’s consistent progress demonstrates that ongoing reforms are delivering measurable results. The latest achievement further strengthens the Kingdom’s position among the world’s most competitive economies.

Climbing into the global top 20 is more than an improvement in ranking; it is a reflection of Bahrain’s continued economic transformation. The 2026 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking highlights the Kingdom’s progress in creating a stable, efficient, and investment-friendly environment. As Bahrain continues implementing reforms and investing in future-ready industries, it is well positioned to strengthen its global standing even further. The achievement also sends a positive signal to businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs looking for opportunities in the region. With sustained commitment to innovation and economic development, Bahrain continues to build a strong foundation for long-term prosperity.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, has issued Decision No. (18) of 2026 regarding new appointments within the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications. 🇧🇭

As part of the latest leadership updates, Mohammed Abdullah Ali was appointed as Director of Information Technology Management, strengthening the ministry’s administrative and technological leadership during a period of continued digital growth across the Kingdom.

The appointment highlights Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to modernize government operations and expand the role of technology across key national sectors. The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications remains central to the Kingdom’s infrastructure development, overseeing transportation systems, aviation services, telecommunications, and digital connectivity initiatives.

The Information Technology Management division plays a critical role in supporting smart government systems, cybersecurity, digital platforms, and operational efficiency within the ministry. Leadership appointments in this sector reflect the increasing importance of technology-driven governance as Bahrain continues pushing forward with innovation and digital transformation goals.

Bahrain has continued investing heavily in advanced technology, smart infrastructure, and digital public services in recent years, positioning itself as one of the Gulf region’s growing hubs for digital innovation and government modernization.

Bahrain is continuing its push toward smarter and more sustainable infrastructure with the nationwide upgrade of traditional street lighting systems to modern LED technology. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and modernize public utilities across the Kingdom.

The new LED lighting systems are being installed across major roads, highways, residential areas, and public spaces as authorities work to replace older high-consumption lighting units with more advanced and environmentally friendly alternatives. The project is expected to significantly lower electricity consumption while improving visibility and road safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Officials noted that LED streetlights consume considerably less power compared to conventional lighting systems, while also offering longer operational lifespans and lower maintenance requirements. The transition is expected to reduce energy waste, minimize maintenance disruptions, and contribute to Bahrain’s sustainability and carbon reduction goals.

Beyond energy savings, the upgraded lighting systems are designed to provide brighter and more uniform illumination across roads and urban areas. Improved visibility is expected to enhance nighttime driving conditions, pedestrian safety, and overall public comfort in high-traffic zones.

The modernization project also aligns with Bahrain’s wider smart city ambitions, which include the adoption of advanced infrastructure technologies aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability, and quality of life. Similar smart infrastructure initiatives have been introduced across transportation, urban planning, and public services sectors in recent years as the Kingdom continues investing in long-term development projects.

The LED rollout reflects a growing regional trend toward environmentally conscious urban development, with Gulf countries increasingly prioritizing green technologies and energy-efficient public infrastructure. Bahrain’s move toward LED systems places additional focus on balancing rapid urban growth with sustainable resource management.

Authorities have not only emphasized the environmental impact of the initiative but also its economic benefits, as reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs are expected to generate long-term savings for public infrastructure operations.

As installation work continues across different parts of the Kingdom, residents are expected to see gradual improvements in nighttime visibility, energy efficiency, and overall urban lighting quality in the months ahead.

The causeway remains one of the busiest crossings in the Gulf, and an additional route can help distribute movement more efficiently.

The plan also aligns with Bahrain’s broader push into maritime transport. In 2025, a passenger ferry service between Bahrain and Qatar was introduced, offering a faster alternative to traditional travel routes.

Further details, including timelines and operations, are expected to be announced as the project develops. For now, the approval sets the direction for a more flexible transport network between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
