The Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) has officially approved a revamped competition format for the 2026/27 Zain Basketball League, introducing significant changes aimed at increasing competition and excitement throughout the season.
The regular season will now follow a single round-robin format, divided into two preliminary phases, ensuring every club faces one another. Teams will be permitted to register three professional imports (1+2) during the preliminary stage, offering greater flexibility in squad building while maintaining competitive balance.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the top eight clubs will advance to the playoffs. The quarter-finals will be contested in a best-of-three format, with matchups based on final standings. From the quarter-finals onwards, clubs will be allowed to field all three imports simultaneously under the new 2+1 rule, a move expected to raise the level of play during the league’s most crucial stages.
The semi-finals and finals will both be played as best-of-five series, placing greater emphasis on consistency, depth, and tactical adjustments.
The new format marks one of the most notable structural changes in recent seasons and is set to reshape how clubs build their rosters and approach the championship race.
